“The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth.”
- Maria Montessori
This school year the Infant classroom decided to focus on developing our outdoor environment. Ashley and I have spent our weekends and staff days developing this area to be baby friendly. We have also had our wonderful intern Kristie Norwood develop some outdoor lessons. We have plans to continue working and developing this area.
It was important for us to use different textures and allow for different experiences. Kristie Norwood created a beautiful music wall for all of our infants to be able to explore. This allowed them to hear and feel different pitches. We have started growing grass in our outdoor classroom. The children have loved feeling the grass on their hands and feet. We created a rock walk. This has a dual purpose. It allows for a different texture on the ground, as well as drainage. We have added beautiful outdoor carpets and pillows to create a comfortable environment for the little ones who aren’t crawling yet. The children love hearing the new wind chimes we installed. Our bird feeder brought in several Cardinals which the children loved watching.
Willie Bedenbaugh created a useful picnic table for our infants. Our little ones who can eat on their own can have snack outside in the morning and it allows our little ones who are learning to pull up to do so. He also made a gate for us, which makes the outdoor area safe for our little ones. We have a long way to go, but with special donations from Willie Bedenbaugh, Abigail Nichols, Kristie Norwood, and Ashley Turner our outdoor environment has had major overhaul this school year.
